How and Why DHW, LLC Began
My name is John Hines. I earned my bachelor's degree in Secondary Education/Biology from Clarion University of Pennsylvania in 1991. I have been a licensed massage therapist, personal fitness trainer, and nutritional consultant for thirteen years. I founded Dynamic Health and Wellness, LLC after I experienced and witnessed the healing power of this combination of ancient wisdom (i.e. Qigong, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Holistic Nutrition) and modern science and technology. I was fortunate to learn how together these already potent healing tools create a synergy that multiplies their separate capacities to preserve, enhance, and even restore health.
Over thirteen years in allied health care I have learned to be very skeptical of unfamiliar things purported to have great health benefits. I first went to a Qigong seminar primarily to earn continuing education credits necessary for my biennial license renewal. I thought learning about this ancient energy exercise was merely an interesting secondary benefit. As a traditional fitness trainer and deep tissue oriented massage therapist I found it difficult to understand how such a slow and gentle practice could produce very dramatic health benefits.
At the time of the seminat I was in training for an endurance event. I had been suffering for weeks with a very painful and stubborn calf injury. It simply wasn't healing as I continued to train. On the first day of the seminar my calf injury suddenly disappeared during the 35 minute guided exercise called Breath Empowerment. I was able to train at full intensity with no pain.
Needless to say, that experience opened my eyes to the real potential of these practices.
Later, while learning the Level-1 Qigong Healing Form, I felt something in the "empty space" between my hands. It felt like the repelling force between the like poles of two magnets. Despite years of having practiced energy work (Reiki and chakra balancing) in conjunction with massage, I had never felt anything like this. I doubted my own senses. I thought it was just an effect of muscle memory or fatigue. I played with this "force" by moving my hands, and adjusting my arms until I ran out of explanations for what I was feeling. Still, I wasn't ready to fully accept that the omnipresent energy I had long believed existed could actually be so tangible.
Later in the seminar there was a presentation about whole food nutrion and healing with food. While most of the support for the claims made about this healing system was anecdotal, it somehow seemed right. And the scientific evidence and foundation provided was consistent with what I knew from my background as a biologist and years of work with nutrition. I found the presentation compelling enough to buy the book, Conquering Any Disease, written by Qigong Practitioner Jeff Primack.
Immediately following the seminar I visited my grandparents. I was very upset to find my previously vibrant 84 year old grandmother literally nearing death. I knew she had been sick however, I had not been told how sick she had become through months of steady decline. The doctors could not figure out what was wrong and she got worse with every attempt to treat what they couldn't diagnose. My grandfather worried she was not going to survive more than a few weeks longer. As it turned out, I believe the timing of my visit and having learned about food-based healing was beyond what can be explained as a fortunate coincidence.
I told my grandparents what I had learned about healing with whole food. To my surprise they embraced it. I got them started on the appropriate Food Healing protocols that week. Gathering the foods and making their daily smoothy empowered my Grandfather. With no diagnosis to go on I had to choose protocols based on my Grandmother's symptoms. (Part of the beauty of Healing with Whole Food is it provides your immune system the nutrition it needs to heal the body even when the root cause of symptoms cannot be identified.) On day three my grandmother said she didn't feel worse for the first time in months. Two weeks later her symptoms had noticably improved. A month later she was washing the curtains and cooking dinners. In addition, my mother came to visit them and immediately noticed that my grandfather "had more energy than he had displayed in ten years." That is why I believe food healing later saved his life as well. He contracted E.coli a few months later. Allowed to worsen due to delayed medical care, the infection became systemic. It was a close call. Without the renewed energy and strength he had garnered from months of Food Healing it is very doubtful he would have survived.
Additionally, I had practiced the Level-1 Qigong daily for thirty days straight following the seminar. After a couple weeks I realized that my chronic neck pain was simply gone. The pain that had kept me spending money on chiropractic care and therapeutic massage for years had disappeared. I have not been to the chiropractor for my neck since (I did go back once when I pulled some muscles in my back swinging my daughter around). And the headaches I would get periodically, when my neck was particularly bad, have not returned either.
The combination of these results was finally enough to convince me that this knowledge was worth studying in depth and ultimately teaching. So I immersed myself in practice and study. Eventually I earned the highest level certification, Level-3 Instructor/Workshop Facilitator. The knowledge and skills I acquired have proved the perfect complement to my experience as a massage therapist, fitness trainer, and nutritional consultant.
